Welcoming Topgolf to Australia
Topgolf Gold Coast opened with a bang last week, with over 1000 people attending a spectacular launch event. Despite plenty of last-minute works in recent weeks, the facility looked amazing and performed perfectly. Adjoining popular theme parks including Warner Bros. Movie World, Wet'n'Wild, and the Australian Outback Spectacular, it’s hard to miss Topgolf God Coast, not least because of that logo on the nets (reportedly the biggest neon sign for a long way).
With 90 bays it’s slightly smaller than their preferred size (thanks to some site constraints) but still packs a punch as you arrive through the impressive foyer, greeted by a team of eager staff recruited specifically to meet the hospitality demands of Topgolf. Service was excellent, food and drinks well above expectations in quality and range, and the crowd - well they were having a ball.
If you haven’t figured out just what Topgolf is yet, we’d recommend getting up there to see for yourself. We’re confident it will change the dial for golf participation in Australia and welcome demographics largely indifferent to traditional golf experiences - and the more people who have swung a club, the larger the potential market for all to access.
Nick Thornton from MPower MSL joined us, having supplied the POS systems firing in the background tracking those dollars flowing through the till. “It’s just a fantastic experience, lives up to all expectations” said Nick.
So what’s next? As Topgolf’s first international expansion site, there’s a lot at stake and local partner Village Roadshow has thrown their considerable muscle behind the venture. Whilst undoubtedly true to the Topgolf vision (the facility was a remarkably consistent model of USA Topgolf sites in every respect) Village Roadshow’s executive team were all in attendance and their experience in the Australian entertainment business brings valuable skills in staff management. Between banging balls at those massive (but hard to hit with my game) targets, we caught up with Topgolf International CEO Troy Warfield, an Aussie expat who is charged with the task of spearheading the international rollout. Troy is eyeing off markets in the Middle East and Europe, but also promised more sites in Australia in the not-too-distant future.
Hear more about Topgolf’s plans for Australia (including Melbourne and Sydney) at the Golf Business Forum in Melbourne this July but in the meantime, check out some of the action at the launch event last week!
